Asa Newell

Asa Newell is a big man with an all-around skillset on both ends. He was an effective finisher around the rim and has a feel for positioning himself in spots to score, whether he’s cutting to the basket or floating around the paint for dump-down opportunities. Newell doesn’t project as a 1A rim protector on the defensive end, but he moves his feet well for a player his size and should provide help-side paint protection from the power forward position. Newell had an up and down season as a long-range shooter, and his ability to consistently space the floor will be what dictates if he reaches his full potential. Overall, his motor and feel for the game should help him impact the game at the next level.

Strengths:

  • High-level touch around the rim. Comfortable shooting push shots and floaters in the paint.

  • Hard-nosed rebounder who creates extra possessions on the offensive glass.

  • Versatile defender who is agile for his size. Moves his feet well guarding screening actions and holds his own when switched onto wings or guards.

  • Potential as a floor-spacer with high arc on his jumper and confidence from three-point range.

  • Smart defender when guarding away from the ball. Positions himself well to protect the rim.

Weaknesses:

  • Streaky shooter who has some bad misses despite strong mechanics and confidence.

  • Doesn’t project as a true center at the next level given his measureables and lack of elite rim protection.

  • Lacks upside as a playmaker with limited passing flashes and average ball-handling.

  • Not a dominant defensive rebounder despite his success on the offensive glass.
