Darius Acuff
Acuff had one of the most statistically productive collegiate seasons for a freshman guard in recent history, showing he can score at all three levels and leverage his scoring to set up teammates for quality shots. His ball-handling and ability to put pressure on the rim as a downhill scorer stood out, embracing physicality on drives and displaying creativity as a finisher with floaters and scoop shots. I have little doubt about him being a quality point guard on the offensive side, but concerns about his defense and lack of effort are fair questions that will determine his overall ceiling at the next level.
Strengths:
Quick first step which helps him get by his initial defender and put pressure on the rim
Uses his burly frame to play through contact and finish in the paint with craft, mixing in scoop shots, floaters, and finishes from different angles.
Improved off-the-dribble shooter who can pull up from the mid-range and from three.
Makes quick passing reads in transition and out of pick-and-roll
Smooth handle in isolation and in ball screen actions.
Weaknesses:
Lacks lateral quickness on defense, often giving up drives to the rim.
Not the twitchiest athlete around the basket, can be bother when trying to finish against length.
Has the tendency to take plays off and coast on defense or when playing off the ball on offense.
Doesn’t navigate screens well on the defensive end.
